What is Girls State?
Girls State is a unique citizenship-training program in which American Legion Auxiliary members guide the youth of our nation toward an understanding, comprehensive and appreciation of their roles as United States citizens. The Auxiliary believes that educating youth a about the basic ideals and principles of government will help ensure the survival of democracy. The objective is to provide "hands on" training in city, county and state government.
The first Girls State in the United States began as one- and two-day sessions in the late1930s. Washington, DC and Delaware are credited with first launching the program. Currently, 49 states conduct Girls State sessions.
