Week-At-A-Glance

Upon arrival on Sunday, the citizens are soon involved in government. Citizens register to vote and hold city elections the first night. They attend political caucuses and decide party slogans and issues before they retire for the night. The two party leaders are the only citizens that cannot run for any other office. They have a full time job running their respective parties for the rest of the week. Party members elect a Vice Chairman, Secretary and five cheerleaders.

Monday and Tuesday's schedules include classes in government, elective activities such as the daily newspaper, choir and public safety taught by two State Troopers. Other classes include Public Speaking/Professional Development, College Preparation, Community Service and Nursing.

After citizens file for county and state offices, they begin campaigning by hanging political signs all over campus and talking to their constituents. Primary elections are held on Tuesday. State candidates give short campaign speeches to the citizens. In addition, the Governor candidates go on Whistle Stop visits to each community. Prior to the general election on Wednesday, a political parade is held with decorated signs, displays and cleverly dressed participants.

On Thursday, the Inauguration ceremony is held with all citizens and staff dressed in white dresses. A WV Supreme Court Judge gives the newly elected Governor of Girls State her oath of office. Later that night, citizens enjoy an assembly with skits and lots of fun.

lf that isn't enough activity, notable visitors speak at assemblies like the Governor of West Virginia. Citizens can show their talents during assemblies.

Three nutritious meals are served in the cafeteria. Country Stores run by Girls State staff members provide snack food and drinks. Other food can be ordered for the evening hours through the University's food service.
